Former Nigeria midfielder, Friday Ekpo, has said the national Under-23 team’s bronze win at the Rio 2016 Olympics will bring out the best in the Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi.
The Team Nigeria captain and leader of the victorious football team assisted the three goals scored by Nigeria in their 3-2 win over Honduras in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
“Mikel has really matured with each game he played at the Olympics. He showed that he is capable of leading the team when the occasion calls for it. He was cool-headed and showed the creativity he was known for during his Under-20 days,” Ekpo told our correspondent.
“He has become a player who can attack and defend at the same time. I praise Samson Siasia for letting him show what he could do among those young players at that level.
“The medal he won in Brazil will spur him on to do greater things in the Eagles. Now that he is captain of the national team and under a new coach, Mikel will perform as he did in Rio.
“As a player, when you win laurels, it has a way of making you deliver more and utilise more the talent you have. Same could be said of Mikel. The medal won in Rio will open a new chapter in his game and make him do better than he had been doing for the Eagles.”
Meanwhile, Mikel took to Twitter to show off his Olympic bronze and thanked everyone who helped his “dream come true”
