To ensure the delivery of high quality education to pupils in the state, the Lagos State government, has directed proprietors of private schools, irrespective of their accreditation status, to register their institutions at the education district within their area of operation on or before Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
A statement by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Education, Adesegun Ogundeji, a copy of which The Guardian obtained, quoted the Deputy Governor/Education Commissioner, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, as giving the ultimatum in her office where she warned that failure to do so would attract severe punishment.
The statement added that the Akinwunmi Ambode led-administration places high premium on the important services being rendered by private and public educational institutions for socio-economic development of the state. “Hence, there was the compelling need to redefine the criteria for the delivery of quality education in the state.”
The statement added that the exercise was strictly meant to gather data that will avail the government the opportunity to know all the education service providers in the state; visit and monitor what they are doing to ensure that they operate in line with the quality assurance regulation of schools below tertiary level.
She noted that the government owes it a responsibility to all pupils in the state, whether in public or private schools, accredited or yet to be approved, to ensure that they are not half-baked. The registration according to her is free of charge and will be of immense benefit to the proprietors as they will be guided on how to meet accreditation criteria.
Having been given the opportunity to register their schools with the government free of charge, Adebule warned that any school that refuses to register will be deemed to harbour ulterior motives and will be sanctioned as appropriate when detected. She, however, added that government was not out to send any school out of business, but to help them grow and operate in conducive environment.
“Schools in remote areas experiencing dearth of teachers would be taken care off in the recruitment of 1,000 teachers approved by the governor as the recruitment will be need based.”
