TWO most popular communities in Gaambe-Tiev Ward of Logo Local Government Area in Benue State, Chambe and Anawah, were early hours of Sunday completely razed down by suspected Fulani herdsmen, leaving five people dead.
The suspected attackers invaded the affected communities first on Saturday at about 9am when most of the occupants had already gone to their farms, killing two old men and three children.
Another source said that the herdsmen also barricaded all routes leading to the area till 12.30pm of Sunday, where two persons were reportedly killed before the armed policemen came to dislodge them.
According to an eyewitness, Chief Joseph Anawah, who hailed from one of the affected communities, the armed herdsmen stormed the villages, singing war songs, shooting and destroying houses, huts and food barns in the affected communities.
He said, like in the past, the fresh attack was unprovoked, adding that armed herdsmen stormed the settlements, shooting sporadically and singing at the same time.
“Our people, including myself, started running for our dear lives, but unfortunately, about five persons were killed and several persons sustained machete cuts and bullet wounds.”
Anawah explained, “As if that was not enough, after chasing the people away, they took over and occupied the affected settlements till the morning of today (Sunday). As I speak with you, two persons have been killed again.”
He lamented that the situation under which the people found themselves in this part of the country was completely helpless, as women and children were being tormented almost on a weekly basis.
He called on the National Emergency Management Agency to come to their aid through the provision of relief materials. He also called on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to this problem of herdsmen attacks.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the fresh attacks by the suspected Fulani herdsmen, said mobile policemen had been mobilised and drafted to the area to forestall further attacks.
